Janez Lotrič

The Slovenian tenor studied at the Ljubljana Academy of Music and in Vienna with Hilde Zadek. He was refining his art of interpretation under direction of Mario del Monaco at Villa Manin. His studies were successful, which documents his third place amongst the strong international competition of the singing contest of Trevis, Italy, awarding of a grant and participation in the final of “Mario del Monaco” contest in Castelfrank. In 1980, while still studying, Janez Lotric made his début as Nemorino in the Elixir of Love in the Opera of Maribor, where he stayed in the engagement till 1987. He later sang in German Osnabrück, appeared as guest in several opera houses of former Yugoslavia, in Germany, Austria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. In June 1996, he debuted at the stage of the Vienna State Opera and introduced himself at the prestigious stages of Salzburg, at Deutsche Oper Berlin, in Graz and at Opéra Comique in Paris. At the beginning of 1997, Lotric performed the role of Don José in Carmen at the State Opera of Hamburg and the role of Kalaf in Puccini’s Turandot in the Copenhagen Opera. In December 2000, Janez Lotric successfully debuted in La Scala, Milan as Manrico in Verdi’s Il Trovatore. He recorded a lot for radio and television and published two solo CD’s.

The Prague State Opera in cooperation with the Slovart publishing house publishes a representative book tracking the history of this significant cultural institution since its opening in 1888 till the end of the 2002/2003 season. The publication called The Prague State Opera – Theatre History in Pictures and Dates is focusing solely on the opera featured at the scene, even though the theatre under various names also served to presentation of drama plays, operettas and ballet. The Prague State opera plans to publish the volumes concentrating on those genres in the next years.
