Martin Černý

After graduating from a secondary school in 1995–2000, Martin Černý studied stage design at the department of alternative and puppet theatre of the Prague Theatrical Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts – DAMU. As early as during his studies, Martin had the opportunity to test his visions in practical theatre. Martin cooperated with stage director Leinweberová on the Salome project at a synagogue in Libeň in Prague, he took part in the staging of The Goldberg Variations in Roxy Club, together with the Continuo Theatre he participated in a project entitled Kratochvílení 99 at the South Bohemian chateau of Kratochvíle. Beside, he also took part in the production of the DAMU students’ performances at their DISK Theatre. Martin did not seek permanent engagement after graduating from DAMU; rather, he has performed as a guest at various theatres, often under the same stage directors. He designed, inter alia, stage setting for the following productions: Shakespeare’s King Lear in Yaroslavl, Russia, for director Ivan Rajmont; Goethe’s Faust and Molier’s Don Juan at Klicperovo Divadlo theatre in Hradec Králové; Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost at Prague Castle; Beaumarchaise’s Le Nozze di Figaro at Divadlo pod Palmovkou theatre; Molier’s School for Wives at the National Theatre in Brno; Goldoni’s Le baruffe chiozzotte at Divadlo na Fidlovačce theatre. Also for director Ivan Rajmont, he set the stage at the National Theatre in Prague for the following plays: Dostoyevsky and Ginko’s Moths, Orestes by Aischylos, Crimp’s Countryside, Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, and Sheridan’s School for Scandal. Martin also designed the stage for Bulgakov’s The Heart of a Dog at the Rubín Studio theatre, Dostoyevsky’s The Gentle Maiden at the Malé Divadlo theatre in České Budějovice, for mini operas The Knight and the Death and Jelizaweta Bam by V. Wimmer, within a project named Knocking on the Iron Curtain at the Prague State Opera. He has also cooperated with Ján Ďurovčík in Painted on Glass and The Full Monty in Liberec, and in Bolero for the Slovak Dance Theatre in Bratislava.

The Prague State Opera in cooperation with the Slovart publishing house publishes a representative book tracking the history of this significant cultural institution since its opening in 1888 till the end of the 2002/2003 season. The publication called The Prague State Opera – Theatre History in Pictures and Dates is focusing solely on the opera featured at the scene, even though the theatre under various names also served to presentation of drama plays, operettas and ballet. The Prague State opera plans to publish the volumes concentrating on those genres in the next years.
