In 1988–1992 he studied stage and costume design at the Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in Salzburg. During 1992–1994 he was engaged as an assistant stage designer at Mannheim National Theatre then became an independent stage and costume designer in 1995. Robert Schrag created dozens of costume and scenic designs for ballet, drama and opera productions in Mannheim (Franz Kafka: Knife in the Heart, Young Choreographers, The Ten Commandments), Munich (Lewis John Karlin: Solstice), Nuernberg (Theatre Mumpitz – Devil with Three Golden Hairs), Zwickau, Leipzig, Frankfurt, also Austria (Salzburg – Goldoni: The Servant of Two Masters, Slavomir Mrozek: On Foot), France (Theatre St. Quentin in Paris – George Gershwin: Mark’s Smile) and Spain (festival in Quenco – Benjamin Britten: The Burning Fiery Furnace). He has also devoted himself to watercolour painting and has exhibited at many exhibitions in Germany and elsewhere. Robert Schrag commenced his co-operation with choreographer Bronislav Roznos in 1994, and was involved in most of his productions since then. He sees the sets and costumes not as a mere decoration but as an important component in overall dramaturgy (dramatisation) of the performance.
